[Update:]Michiru’s Character Study

UPDATE

11 March 2024

I wish I could make an update right now, telling you I have written so much fic, that is almost done, but I can’t

the journey have been a fuckery, to say the least. that crash has thrown me off the loop, I’m still dealing with paper work, my knee is in bad shape, my entire body is in bad shape, and well, I’m not at my best mentally.

as I have previously mentioned I have broken the 20k threshold, I have managed to make that change in one of the scenes that didn’t feel nice, and about 1k words beyond that.

on top of all, I’ve been playing video games in my free time, well A video game. and it has consumed my fucking life.

anyway hopefully I’ll find my inspiration back soon and start writing the fic again.

15 July 2023

ahhh I haven’t written a single word on this story since the last time, it’s been a year since my motorcycle crash, and I have been extremely busy with work, also my body’s condition is not good, so I’m trying to catch up with health and inspiration has been very low.

good thing is that I have some interesting deeper info about how Japanese society works, from a friend who is married into it 😛 and they love to share their cultural shock with me. And since this is a character study for Michiru, and I touch on her family dynamic and everything it truly is very valuable info, which I can get inspiration from.

15 Jan 2023

hey everyone, happy new year

the fic has been on stand by at the moment ever since my crash, I had knee surgery recently, and because of both catching up with work, and running around dealing with the accident paper work and stuff, I haven’t found the time to write much. There is a scene I want to change, and I have written some small parts here and there but nothing significantly big.

that being said, I wrote a smut yesterday, I have the link on the side bar.go check it out and leave a review to boost my spirits 😀

this month is going to be very busy for me, so I doubt I’ll progress at all on this fic.

3 July 2022

no fic update but more of a personal update

i was in a motorcycle accident, my moto gear did its job i escaped the worse with just a broken wrist

fic writing will take a break for a bit but inspiration is high so as long as i can type with both hands i’ll be back to it . yeahh

18 June 2022

I about to break the 20k words threshold, and Michiru is still 14 and has yet to awaken as Neptune.

Exploring her Elsa phase, and even that is at the beginning.

this fic is going to be one of my largest fics I’ve ever written holy shit!

I have been very busy with work the past months so about zero time to write. But the inspiration is here.

Michiru is so gay in this fic there is no heterosexual influence around her! and no I’m not going to elaborate 😛

13 Feb 2022

The fic is going well, I’m up to 13k. words which is an achievement for me, as a short story author, and Michiru has just seen Haruka for the first time. No guardian business so far. Her current romantic escapade revolves around Elsa, and it’s going to be emotional for them because it is the time she starts falling for Haruka and also the time she starts having nightmares.

One thing for sure is that Michiru is so lesbian, you haven’t seen her like that in any fics before. Not even mine, lol. She goes to a girls academy in canon, lol Which is probably a catholic school (because with lil research it seems that only those are single gender in Japan lol) and we all know what kind of lesbian havens the catholic schools are 🤣🤣🤣

I also got a name for the fic: “The life of someone as extraordinary as her

14 Dec 2021

I’ve been writing a character study type of fic that revolves around Michiru, and her life, from birth to adulthood, including her relationships with her family, her girlfriends before Haruka, her life WITH Haruka, confronting her parents about it, etc.

The fic is filled to the brim with cultural explanations of why some things happen, which I’m sure the fandom will find them strange as they are not typical in western world. Of course there are several OCs that I created for the purpose of giving Michiru a background story that is not present in any of the original works. I use my fav 90s anime character Elsa Gray, because she’s amazing.

The study will also touch on Michiru’s awakening as Neptune. How the memories of her past life affected her, but most importantly how she fell in love with Haruka before all that.

I’m certain the fandom is not ready to accept of how much of a lesbian Michiru is, and my fic is very much that. I have named it Michiru’s lesbian journey, but I’ll most probably give it a different title before posting it lol. But this draft title says everything you need to know about Michiru ahahaha.

HaruMichi headcanons that get the characters so wrong

a thing I’m not going to talk about on tumblr, because people there are not ready to hear.

THIS HEADCANON read it, think about every word and tell me this is not the influence of the 90s anime, I dare you.

THE AUDACITY TO USE THE MANGA PICTURE

the first wrong:

they break up to find themselves

implies that one is an obstacle to the other’s life, and vice versa.

have we seen that ever in the manga? The answer is no. They put their careers to the pause because of the mission at hand which is SAVING THE WORLD. But after that and after they lose their powers, Michiru is in Vienna for concert while Haruka is in South Africa for a race. So neither stops doing the things they love because they are together romantically. All the while raising a fucking child!

Of course someone would argue that career is not the only thing in life, which is true. So what other obstacle could each other be. Dating other people?

Why is that so necessary if they have already found the love of their lives? How them being together when we first see them, makes it impossible for them to have been in other relationships prior.

they are 16 when we meet them, they might have awaken less than six months before, they might have dated for less. But for the sake of the argument I will give them a year together. So prior to 15 they most likely had relationships with other teens their age.

So how many relationships do they need, before they settle with their person?

in the 90s anime they weren’t dating when we first saw them. so they could very well be with other ppl before the season started. But in the 90s there was the element of jealousy at play, mostly by Haruka but also made a gag out of Michiru answering maybe when questioned if she’s jealous.

So yes Jealousy IS AN OBSTACLE, which is not present in the manga whatsoever.

The second wrong:

when they get back together

after how long? do they break up at 18 and they get back together at 40? Or they just break up for like a year? What changed in that amount of time? Career progress? being with other people? making a family with someone else? Going through several break ups with other people, trauma, abuse, what?

Or do they break up at 35 because they want to clearly date other people? And if so, then why they come back together? At that stage in life, they know what they want (I assume for them specifically because it aligns with their personalities, it’s not a fact of life for everyone). Michiru has probably accomplished EVERYTHING as a musician, multiple records, playing with the best orchestras in the world, probably producing for others, she is even teaching in the manga. Haruka at 35 as a race car driver is that the epilogue of her career, probably an F1 world champ, more than once (as she’s written to be extremely skillful). Most drivers at that age, thinking of their retirement or taking it a bit easier with other racing programs not as demanding, they have spouses and kids, so the thirst for racing is fulfilled.

why does a breakup in any stage of their life would make their bond stronger? Why was their bond prior to break up not strong enough?

The third wrong:

Their dynamic is healthier too

This one implies that their dynamic is not healthy. Which I find very puzzling, because in the manga, there is not a single case of them raising red flags. They are sweet and tender to each other, respect and love each other, protective of each other, no jealousy is present, as explained above neither was ever an obstacle to the other’s career. They communicate their feelings, one example is when Haruka in dream arc sheds a tear because she misses her princess, Michiru is there by her side, hugs her, and Haruka opens up and tells her the reason she’s crying, no hiding, not wiping the tear away, just open and real. Their playful banter when they return to school in Stars, and Haruka is grumpy for having to get up early, and Michiru is enthusiastic with her return to school, she greets everyone and she’s thinking of getting lover letters again. So yeah again where is the unhealthy dynamic? Just because two people are together for long and may or may not have experiences with other people that doesn’t mean that it’s a red flag. In fact I would argue that they are both on even play-field in terms of experiences.

In the 90s now, as mentioned above Haruka is a jealous person. That is toxic, especially when she tells Michiru to not get people inside her dressing room, that’s controlling. Haruka also flirts in front of Michiru with other people, that’s a shitty behaviour. So if you go with THAT with your headcanon then yes as they are shown in the 90s they are not healthy.

Now if any of this has to do with their whole destiny bs, I gotta say that manga HaruMichi are not together because of destiny, they are together because they are both lesbians who find each other very very hot. The fact that their guardian crystals know each other from their past, is not informing their attraction, it amplifies it. Imagine being that strong a lesbian that your love for your woman transcended time and space! HaruMichi (manga version) can relate.

More HaruMichi fanfic pet-peeves

You know how Haruka is 99% of the times portrayed as this very experienced, very confident, very flirty lesbian?

I don’t agree with half of it, but whatever I’m not going to say no to a confident Haruka.

what irks me with such portrayal of Haruka is that when it comes to Michiru she’s suddenly not experienced, not confident, and not flirty. And she can’t tell for the life of her if Michiru is interested in her, if she’s attracted to women, if she’s a lesbian. nothing.

literally HOW.

make it make sense.

they apply the “dumb lesbian” stereotype on Haruka when they also portray her as a very confident, very experienced one.

to think that Haruka will lock eyes with Michiru, (who would instantly fuck her with her eyes) and Haruka would think, “nah that girl is straight”

HaruMichi in the 90s

I just watched a video from 2017, it was an interview of Ogata Megumi, the VA of Haruka, the video is on niconico here

EDITED VERSION

After confirming with a friend, who has way better Japanese than me

It seems, that when she was to play Haruka, she and Michiru’s VA were told to play them as a married couple (which is a well known fact for years) but what is not knows is what she says next, that she questioned that even though Haruka was crossdressing, they were still a gay couple, right? And the producer told her that “they are not a gay couple”

which furthers my suspicion that they made Haruka so masculine leaning in fashion and speech, because they wanted to portray them as a heteronormative couple to not upset the straights™.

another thing Megumi said was that while she was at a con in New York, they told her, she was asked if in Japan, since she’s playing an openly gay character, the religious groups were triggered. which is absurd because religion in Japan is mostly cultural (people go to shinto shrines are new years eve, and they are buried in Buddhist style but don’t follow either).

the girl interviewing her in this vid was so scandalized by that she yelled “what are you even saying!!!! This is the yuri world’s charisma!”

she also commented on how ridiculous it was to make HaruMichi cousins in the US when they had the hands scene!

Haruka can wear whatever the F she wants

okay recently I posted a link to a tumblr blog I maintain, with said tumblr account I look up the tags, and there was that one post the other day saying that fan artists who draw Haruka in feminine clothing are wrong without elaborating

Me and some others jumped on the post of course saying pretty much “READ THE DAMN MANGA”

but I don’t think this is enough anymore

because here’s the thing, no matter what you think Haruka’s gender ID is, HARUKA CAN WEAR WHATEVER THE FUCK SHE WANTS!

  • Do you think Haruka is a cis-woman? Me too! She can wear skirts and show off her abs with crop tops, and she also can wear pants and shirts.
  • Do you think Haruka is non-binary? Cool, Haruka can wear skirts and show off abs with crop tops, and also can wear pants and shirts.
  • Do you think Haruka is a trans-woman? I’m so down with that headcanon! Haruka can wear skirts and show off her abs with crop tops, and she also can wear pants and shirts.
  • Do you think Haruka is a trans-man? I’m cool with that too! And Haruka can wear skirts and show off abs with crop tops, and also can wear pants and shirts. YES HARUKA CAN WEAR WHATEVER THE HELL HARUKA WANTS. a man in a dress is not less of a man, get over yourselves.
  • Do you think for some bizarre season that Haruka is a cis-het-man in civilian form? I mean, you wanna be wrong? I don’t give a fuck, still Haruka can wear whatever the hell Haruka wants, including dresses, skirts, high heels, makeup!

So go fuck yourself you are just homophobic, transphobic, and sexist if you think feminine clothing makes Haruka less of the badass she is, or whatever you had in mind when you made that post, FOR FAN ART of all things.

I have seen it in fanfics for years, a Haruka who hates everything feminine for herself, is uncomfortable in her sailor suit, and 9 out 10 ten times she hides that she’s a woman.

That is not Haruka though, even 90s Haruka was never shown to hate her sailor suit! in fact she was so confident about her body that she even went naked in front of everyone!

lol in the 90s she even called out those other racers for saying she shouldn’t win cause she’s a girl! So you imply that THAT 90s Haruka would hate anything feminine? or her body, or hide who she is?

In the manga her fashion consists of items that show off her abs and legs at EVERY chance!

why after almost 3 decades we still have to explain the fucking obvious? WHY?

Queer characters in Sailor moon

I have talked about this multiple times, and I’ll talk about it once more

This analysis is going to be touching on manga, crystal, the musicals, and PGSM, and NOT the 90s anime, a.k.a: all the works created and approved by Naoko herself and not what the 90s production delivered.

Toei and the 90s producers stripped all the characters of their queer identities, and straight coded even HaruMichi, so there is no reason for me to speak about THAT. Also Toei is disgusting on how they treat their queer employees so literally FUCK them.

Back to the topic:

I’ve been enjoying some cartoons lately that have massive queer rep (GOOD REP), and they are rightfully praised for it, which made me think a lot of how Naoko treated her characters and why that was so significant.

The cartoons in question are the new She-ra(Netflix), and The owl house(Disney). Both, by queer creators which is important, have brought good rep on kids programs and that’s fantastic (Also these shows have amazing stories so go enjoy them)

  • She-ra’s creator had to fight to get her protagonist to be a lesbian and include a romantic kiss at the last scene of the last episode between 2 women. There were more characters who were queer, one of them had two dads, he was also bisexual, a legit lesbian married couple, and multiple other character who were queer, including a character who was non-binary.
  • The Owl House’s creator had to also fought, and sadly the show will be shortened and pretty much cut as the third season will only have 3 long episodes instead of full seasons the two prior have gotten. What she managed was to get two girls to confess their love and start dating in the middle of season 2, which means that we will get to see them date. Also there is already a non-binary character who is also older(in their 40s) and another one hinted, in the magical world she has created there is no homophobia or transphobia, also a main character again like in She-ra she had two dads. Another main character and the non-binary one have dated in the past, and nobody bats an eyelash.

As I said about the Owl House we are in a magical world(everyone is an elf or demon, the same happens with She-ra, it’s a magical world everyone is an alien. Which means the creators can build the worlds however they want without bringing homophobia into it.

Now if we look at Sailor Moon, which was written in the 90s and how literally every character was effortlessly queer, and how nobody ever questioned that. Usagi having heart eyes for all her guardians, Rei being either ace or a lesbian(PGSM made her canon lesbian in love with Minako), Ami being in love with Usagi (especially in PGSM, even the actresses commented on that), Makoto the only one who leaned more into being attracted to just boys, Minako who was never boy crazed, heavily queercoded by the end of the manga and canon in PGSM. Mamoru extremely homoerotic with his generals especially in PGSM, but also in the manga. Setsuna was more adoring the Queen than the King in the manga, but they made her admit being in love with Endy in the old musicals which were heavily influenced by the 90s anime so, meh. Hotaru clearly showing only signs of attraction towards Chibiusa, saying the typical in yuri manga confessions “even though we are both girls, I love you”, even Mamo commented that he felt he was sending his daughter to her wedding lol, of course Chibs being queer as fuck like her mama and papa. And then there is HaruMichi, shown as a couple, through and through, all the characters know they are a couple, they live together, they raise a CHILD together, it cant get any clearer than that.

Seiya also a lesbian in love with Usagi. Many character do crossdress including the 3 lights, Haruka, and Hawk’s eye, but there is no reference of them being non-binary, the 3 lights are women they only crossdress for their mission, Haruka does the same for a fraction of the manga, as for Hawk’s eye they do appear as amab and they use fem pronounces and appearance, but they don’t live long enough to touch on that.

Even though Sailor moon is also a magical world, it is very slice of life, with regular people with no powers and in the middle of Tokyo, a real city in the real world. Naoko didn’t build a world without prejudice, she removed prejudice from a real world. I don’t think Naoko even understand the concept of heterosexuality to begin with, but she still grew up in a society with a lot of pre-decided roles of what women and men should and shouldn’t do. The entire concept of Sailor moon was to show her bosses (who were men) that girls can be girly, and cute, and still be bad asses and save the world. and she did THAT in the 90s. of course her work was heavily censored all over the world, but with crystal/eternal and the new musicals it’s a second chance to show the world how having queer character in your show doesn’t have to be all about homophobia and negativity.

and I love that for Sailor Moon

Haruka’s gender in Eternal films

so I read someone saying that Haruka’s gender is ambiguous in the eternal films, and I wanted to make VERY clear that, that is not the case at all.

while the cut a scene from the films that had a random figuring Haruka is a girl, The audience doesn’t need that scene to know, cause Haruka uses fem pronouns and language so it is very VERY clear that Haruka is a girl in the Eternal films.

The Outers’ pain

We need to talk about the Outers and their pain, because my girls need serious therapy!

in black moon arc we learn about Pluto and her solitude, Luna even says how it was a forbidden knowledge to know the existence of her, she was appointed when she was but a child (like all guardians) by Queen Serenity, by infinity arc we learn that 2 more soldiers exist whose existence was also a secret. Along with Pluto, Uranus and Neptune had an even greater duty which seemed to have been kept a secret even from them, the power their talismans held. It was forbidden for them to meet, we know they could communicate with each other through video calls (yep naoko invented video calls before they were cool 😛 )but they were to remain away from each other. That solitude was hard on them, but duty to their queen and princess was so much more important to them.

Michiru says that the moon was their home(not their planets) so it’s safe to assume that their planets were not inhabited, but regardless they were alone in their castles. There only salvation and source of courage was the light of their Queen and Princess. That’s what kept them sane.

When Sil Mil met its demise, they couldn’t leave their posts, they were not allowed to leave their posts, so they watched their home being destroyed unable to do anything to save it. And I think it was that devastating feeling that activated their Talismans which transferred them to the Moon, their meeting of course caused the link between the talismans to activate and bring forth Saturn. Imagine their sorrow when Saturn lowered her Glaive and destroyed what was left of the Moon kingdom, their home. They couldn’t do anything to protect their home and their Princess and Queen, and their mere existence brought the ultimate destruction.

When in present, it was Saturn who awaken them, but it was too late, the enemy had already invaded Earth so they once again failed their duty, and on top of that Saturn had also reincarnated, therefore their presence was to bring destruction upon the world.

When they said they had to kill Hotaru to prevent Saturn from awakening, and Sailor Moon refused, it’s Pluto who says they knew she would say that, and then Neptune tells everyone, “you can hate us if you want” “we wont let this world die”

but then the moment they felt their Princess and the inner being in dangers they ran to their rescue. The way Sailor Moon hugs Uranus, telling her how she wanted this union for their hearts to be one, Uranus hugs Sailor Moon tighter and reassures her that that’s what they (the outers) also want.

Those moments are so powerful, and they showcase the need the outers have to be close to their princess, to protect her, to fight along side her and make her proud.

When in Dream arc they have no powers anymore it is so hard for them, Michiru’s outburst is very telling. All they ever wanted was to be close to her.

Pronouns and speech patterns for dream arc characters

Japanese language offers several option for gender expression through speech.

for reference here’s a pronoun (for I) spectrum chart on the bi flag gender expression scale

Along with the pronounces there are speech patterns that also define someones gender expression. For example sentences ending in “wa” sound are feminine, and those ending in “ze” are quite masculine. There are more but you need to go deep into language for more, so let’s take these two that are heard in the Eternal films.

INNERS:
Usagi, Ami, Rei, Makoto, Minako, Chibiusa, ans Luna all use feminine pronoun “atashi” and most times than not end their sentences with “wa”

Mamoru use “ore”
Artemis uses “boku”

Diana: is full on noble speech and uses “watashi”, I guess grown up around Royals does that to you 🤣

OUTERS:
Setsuna, Michiru, use feminine “atashi”, and “wa”, Michiru’s speech is also more noble, bc she’s a queen we all know that 😛
Hotaru is using the neutral “watashi”, and also very standard text book Japanese (Setsuna in the 90s also did that)
Haruka finally uses feminine “asahi” (the VA had said for SMC3 she didn’t go any more fem than “watashi” thankfully she changed her mind) she finishes sentences with “wa” sometimes but not always, her Japanese goes from neutral to fem and back, she’s not consistent, but leans more into fem, overall in the story.

VILLAINS

Amazon Trio:
Hawk’s and Tiger’s use ultra fem “atashi” and end their sentences in “wa”
Fish’s uses “boku”

Nehelenia uses “watashi” and noble speech since she’s a queen
Zirconia also uses “watashi” not very noble though

Amazon Quartet
PallaPalla uses “atashi” and childish speech
VesVes uses “atashi” and normal speech, a bit aggressive but normal
CereCere uses “atashi” and noble speech, her speech resembles that of Michiru’s
JunJun is full no ultra masculine “ore” and ends sentences with “ze”

Rewatched 90s Sailor moon S

and it’s not good…

It’s been several years since I had watched the 90s maybe the last time was around 2012 before crystal and the new musicals. by that time I had watched and read the rest of the media that sailor moon has to offer, so I had accepted what the 90s was without much of critical eye on it, and I was combining all elements from all versions to get my character meta.

I was always focused on HaruMichi the most because these two were always my favs, so besides some small cringe things about them in the 90s that I have always being critical of (Haruka flirting with Usagi in front of Michiru) I didn’t look into everything else in depth.

But then Crystal came, and so much hate intensified by this horrendous fandom, that made me focus more into the original work (manga) and by extend crystal, liking more and more the way Naoko had envisioned them, instead of what the 90s did. But still I kept the 90s in a standard higher than it actually deserves. then fews months ago I found someone on tumblr of all places that was actually a fan of the manga and crystal, and critical of the 90s anime, this is her blog, she does amazing meta and rants about sailor moon, go give her some love! From her blogs which are mostly focusing on debunking every bullshit ever said about Mamoru, that is not based in reality, I was inspired and decided to look at the 90s even more critically than I already had. One way was of course to rewatch things.

Time is limited and Tanya has already covered everything that there is about the inners, so I went straight for the S season, to do some analysis on HaruMichi mostly and the S story as a whole.

First of all, we all agree in this fandom that the SuperS is the most altered from the manga, but holy shit WTF is S!

Plot line wise, the only similar thing is that Pharaoh90 is the big bad and Mistress9 is the entity that resides into Hotaru’s body, everything else is just not the infinity arc…

Let’s start with the big baddies:
Professor Tomoe: he gets redeemed with a sob story, that he was such a good father and good scientist manipulated by Pharaoh90, and such bullshit like that, when in the manga he was an unethical scientist experimenting on humans, and when Pharaoh90 offered to make Hotaru a host of a superior life form, while “saving” her life, he gladly accepted, no hesitation whatsoever, of course he himself would be a host but he wanted that, it was his scientific dream after all.
Kaorinite: she was just a woman trying to get Tomoe’s romantic affection, her smarts and magical abilities nowhere to be found.
Eudial: possibly the only one not shown chasing after Tomoe’s affection, smart, but impatient that made her for comic relief until her eventual death.
Mimette: a fucking sexual predator, her daimons to obtain the heart crystal they had to kiss the victims, considering that all her victims were attractive men (celebrities, athletes, etc) and she was creepily stalking them. She also killed Eudial, she was ageist towards her, amongst all the nasty things she had to say about her. Also chasing after Tomoe’s romantic affection, something HE ACTUALLY got advantage of
Viluy, Telulu, and Cyprine: single episode villains, got to humiliate Kaorinite, while trying to win Tomoe’s romantic affection, but they were one hit wonder and died in the same up.
Mistress9 and and Pharaoh90: didn’t defer much, he was a Metalia type of chaotic entity, and Mistress9 was stuck inside Hotaru’s body, and had to fight her for dominance.

Daimons: Eudial’s ones were hilarious and I love them with all my heart, Mimette’s were disgusting sexual predators, if the tables were turned and the victims were women and the baddies were men, Sailor Moon would have been cancelled in an instant for the predatory behaviour and outright sexual assault, but because the victims were men it was made for laughs 😒 Just a reminder that the majority of the 90s writers were men.

Plot wise, what did Pharaoh wanted? energy from pure hearts and the energy of the grail to make it to earth. In the manga he wanted the energy from the silver Crystal for the same reason, pretty straight forward. or is it? Because we only know of that in the last 5-6 episodes while in the manga we learn it far more earlier in the story. And here’s were things get really different.

When HaruMichi appear, they have no idea what they are fighting for. They are looking for the talismans sure but they don’t know why other than some vague dreams about the end of the world. Their whole Sil Mil back story is irrelevant, they only tell Mamochan that they are stronger because their mission is to protect from outside threats. They don’t know about Pharaoh90, and the talismans have a completely different use. They don’t know shit, and when they find the talisman, which create the grail and not awaken Saturn, then suddenly they need to find Saturn and kill her, which makes no sense whatsoever. When Mistress9 steals Chibiusa’s heart crystal, they don’t even know what they are fighting for. They never use the power of the talisman, until they fight Prof. Tomoe, and Pluto dies in the stupidest way possible which also washes her from all responsibility of trying killing Saturn. In the end they are captured, Sailor Moon gives the grail to the big baddie, Saturn appears for a split second, and the end. HaruMichi FUCKING STEAL the baby from Usagi’s arms, like wat? and then give it back to Prof. Tomoe who was redeemed with as I said a sob story, and a collage of steal images of Hotaru being a happy little kid.

In the manga/crystal they already have the talismans and they have their memories from Sil Mil and how Saturn destroyed everything (being dead after her attack of course didn’t allow them to know the full power of Saturn and that rebirth follows) All they know is that since they have awaken that means that Saturn has as well, so their mission focuses on finding Saturn and killing her from the start. They go undercover in Mugen, and there they realize that someone from outer space is also trying to attack Earth, which is a duty that falls on the Outers. When Hotaru turns into Mistress9 they work with Sailor Moon to defeat her, and when Saturn appears they relive their Sil Mil memories thinking that Sailor Moon is dead. but because of Sailor Moon sacrifice Saturn is able to defeat Pharaoh90 and allow Sailor Moon to use the silver crystal to rebirth everyone. CONSISTENCY

Now lets talk about the animation:
we been knew that the S season had the worst production value of all other seasons, but my fucking papayas, I had forgotten how bad it was. First of all the copy pasta animation was not just the transformations and the attacks, but also every daimon had the same death animation, every daimon creation in the lab had the same animation, every scene with Tomoe in the lab started the same, every witches5 in the lab animation started the same, about 25% if not more of each episode’s animation was copy paste, and because it was recycled it was well refined, hence why many think that the 90s was the pinnacle of animation quality. The different art styles were very visible, with some better some worse.

Music and voice acting:
Arisawa Takanori was a genius composer and the music from 90s sailor moon will forever be the best anime music ever. Voice acting was excellent in every aspect, even when the plot was meh, the actors would manage to get you emotionally engaged. If it was not for those to aspects 90s would have been completely trash, and the reason why is that men do not know how to write women stories.

but let’s elaborate on that last thing:
As we all know Naoko is a woman who wrote a story about women for women. What not all of us know is that toei took that story gave it to cis het middle aged men to expand on, and in many cases invent their own shit, since they didn’t give Naoko the time to finish the damn manga. Those cis het middle aged men, wrote the story to appeal to middle age cis het Japanese salary men, who also thirst over school girls and idol groups.

The first element that was all over the place was the “purity” element, pure hearts hold the talismans, when people have their pure hearts extracted they are becoming impure, and the way they demonstrated that was with Motoki’s sister who wanted to treasure her first kiss, and when she lost her pure heart she wanted to kiss whomever. As if saying that kissing is impure, it was disgusting. that same episode we almost saw Uranus’ buttcrack, and several unnecessary panty shots, talk about purity🤮

Of course panty shots were everywhere, including Chibiusa, also Chibiusa was sexually harassed by a boy her age, Minako was sexually harassed while in auditions and they played that as a laughing matter

This perverted asshole who was like 40, was asking Minako (who was in a swimsuit) a 15 year old, if she would be okay if a producer would ask her to go out for dinner with him. Minako replied naively that she has no problem because she likes all food, the woman next to that asshole laughed instead of being angry and calling the police on him.

I have yet to meet an in real life woman who would laugh at that, fictional women written by men on the other hand, plenty…

speaking of Minako, along with the other inners, they are all so boy crazed is ridiculous, especially Minako acts so hysterically, Rei who can be considered either an aromantic or a lesbian, based on the manga, in the 90s is made not only to have random men as her love interest but also boy crazed as well. Makoto is possibly the only one who keeps on thinking about her senpai in both versions. Ami of course is above their “level” as she must remain pure and unattached so the cis het salary man can dream of taking her purity (I hate every word I used in this sentence)

Also plain homophobia when it comes to Makoto going out with HaruMichi. considering that Megumi Ogata was told that HaruMichi are not a gay couple by the production as I have mentioned in this post

https://seramyu.wordpress.com/2021/03/01/harumichi-in-the-90s/

that scene with the girls saying things like “did she changed her preference” or “there are plenty of good looking guys” or USAGI telling Makoto that it’s wrong to fall for Haruka, not because Haruka is taken but because she’s a woman, I see that scene from a different scope, as plain homophobia, because it was all along.

Also when that tea ceremony boy dressed as a sailor guardian, they played it as a gag

I have to say so much about Haruka, and how they made her dress and act as a man 24/7, not a butch lesbian, a man! she never touches Michiru, she acts jealous and possessive (both traits of stereotypical cis het guys) and it was all on purpose to appease the straights™

also Haruka being predatory, when Usagi says that she broke up with Mamoru, Haruka touches her on the shoulder and says “so I have a chance now” the fact that Usagi has the same reaction that she had when Demando was advancing on her speaks volumes. the fact that she runs away speaks even more, and all that in front of Michiru, who of course is not pleased. Don’t forget that in this version Haruka has presented herself as good and wanting to make friends with the inners. Unlike Manga Haruka who after one episode she presents herself as someone to be avoided.

Another thing about Haruka is that she is extremely condescending, she doesn’t just think that the inner would be a burden because of their idealism, but she belittles them in every chance, she thinks they are not good enough to fight alongside her, and she thinks Usagi is completely useless. To be fair Haruka is not even wrong about it, because the 90s made the inner completely powerless and useless, and Usagi was only doing her final move when someone would tell her to. every damn episode pattern was like this: A: the inners would throw an attack, it will fail even a useless daimon would kick their asses, and Tux boy will throw a rose and a line, then tell Usagi to do her thing, Usagi would defeat Daimon, then UraNepu like thieves would look at the heart crystal and return it, B: only one inner will be with Usagi and Chibiusa, inner is useless can’t even attack before gets kicked in the ass, Chibiusa would do her thing and fail every time like a gag, Tux boy will throw a rose and tell Usagi to do her thing, then UraNepu like thieves would look at the heart crystal and return it, C: Usagi and Chibiusa would face a Daimon, Chibiusa’s attack again used as a gag, Tux boy will though a rose tell Usagi to do her thing, then UraNepu like thieves would look at the heart crystal and return it. So the inners would either fail all together because they are powerless, will not be together, or missing completely.

Usagi would be just a clumsy idiot all the time, not knowing what she’s doing, getting yelled by Rei, told to do her thing, rinse and repeat. So Haruka thinking so lowly of them all makes perfect sense, even though so fucking out of character for her if we look at her manga personality.

There is a huge difference with “I don’t want you there because our values collide, and you will be in the way of me achieving my goal” and recognizing they are powerful and competent, and thinking that they are literal trash, and they will be in the way with their useless asses and she will have to save them.

Speaking of SAVING, UraNepu were ruthless, they had no intention on saving any inner, when we FINALLY saw them at the Mugen academy after 30 episodes of them never shown to go there(or seeing the academy at all for that matter and when we did, the infinity delta was nothing like how Naoko has envisioned it:

from the manga and crystal:

In the 90s they only kept the academy and non of the outers apartment building existed)

Anyway back on the fact that 30 episodes in we finally saw them in Mugen, they have already obtained the Talismans at this point, and Ami shows up she’s the one trying to protect them, and fails, and only then HaruMichi transform and finish the job, while blaming Ami for them not being able to kill Hotaru. They thanked her for saving their asses at the end, but holy shit it fell so short.

Just like how they went and fought Sailor Moon at the end, and once she glew up and kicked their asses they drop on one knee, like no, FUCK YOU!

Speaking of condescending I introduce to you 90s Rei, what a fucking bitch all the fucking time, like no matter what Usagi did, good or bad, childish or mature, it didn’t matter one bit, Rei would be up her ass and say something diminishing and nasty to her, and it was not just harmless bickering, it was far, FAR from that, it was bullying, it was constant, and no that’s not friendship that’s abuse. worst part the other inners joined more times than not, inners never said anything to Rei, it was always Usagi’s fault in their eyes that Rei was angry at her.

and then we have Usagi and Chibiusa, no matter the situation, Chibiusa would be so SO rude, then Usagi would always be jealous of her and fighting. Where is the love, where is the care, where is the adoration, where is the admiration, NOWHERE! Chibiusa has no respect for Usagi nor Sailor Moon, even though she knows she’s her mom. Usagi has no love nor care for Chibiusa, even though she knows she’s her daughter. There is even the episode Chibiusa is all nice and cute to Usagi because she wants her to get her the planetarium, and when Ami says to Usagi, well you are her mom after all, Usagi is like “whatt I’m not her mom yet, why should I be the one to do it” like… You spend an entire season trying to save this girl from the baddies and restore her future, and now you are like “fuck it I have no child yet” and poor Mamoru has to deal with all that shit and play dad not just to Chibiusa but to Usagi too.

for the final part of this long ass roasting, here some more detailed looks in some of the things that got on my nerves:
After the Talismans appear, the Outers do nothing, they don’t fight, they just sit back and wait. Pluto gets few scenes interacting with the inners, HaruMichi don’t even want to meet them, they just continue to do nothing. They have no purpose in the show, they do not work together with the inners, they have no clear path, Uranus saves Chibiusa once and then gets naked…

don’t get me wrong any opportunity for Haruka’s nudes I’m all in, but it was so random?

at least we know how short the sailor skirts are? I guess?

okay where were we? a yeah Outers being useless for 20 episodes, then Puu gets murdered for no reason, which makes her connection to the other outers unimportant. Since Usagi can get Super with just crying, after giving the grail away that UraNepu had to go through hell and back to obtain, go against their own morals, let people die, like they need therapy after all the shit the 90s put them threw.

Also I hate how when Usagi cries, she only gets power from the inners, and nothing from UraNepu which makes it even harder to shallow, Because it completely erases their own story, their feelings, the reason why they fight, who they fight for. I HATE everything they did my girls so dirty😭

So after being complete assholes with nothing to do, they steal Hotaru from sailor moon, and when Michiru suggests of them three being a family and Haruka objects! So different from the manga when Haruka not only embraces the idea but she takes it as the new duty of the outers.

Oh yeah and Hotaru is not a cyborg like in the manga, just she has a frail body

Now I need to close this with a positive because no matter what I still do like the 90s anime even though it is by now my least fav
– The backstory of HaruMichi, how Michiru awaken, how she tried to awake Haruka, it was emotionally engaging, and well we don’t know much about them anyway so any piece of info is important.
– from the same episode also comes the BEST one ep character in sailor moon ever Elsa Gray, she’s amazing, I love her, she was friends with Michiru or more than friends if you read my meta
– Eudial’s Daimons were hilarious, top notch humour right there, especial the doorknob one will forever be my fav look at this masterpiece of a daimon!

– the HaruMichi deaths when the talismans appear remain one of the most emotionally charging moment for me, for them, for their relationship, especially when Haruka commits suicide. That’s some heavy stuff and their voice actors along with the music, delivered in those scenes

And that is all

ROASTING has ended.

good night
